Locked In
One self conscious aspect that requires improvement is the connection to the lens that I am using. What the hell does that mean? I mean specifically this,
I do not lack the pre-visualization of the photo, but instead the required distance between me and the subject before I even raise my camera to my eye.
The combination of creativity + anticipation of human actions based on observations is what permits the photographer to capture moments that aren’t random, but were “loading”. It takes time to develop this skill. Another part is to be ready with the camera at that calculated moment which is dependent on familiarity with the camera + lens combination (and this is not even taking into account having the correct exposure settings). Anyway, what measures can be taken to intimately comprehend the camera + lens combination to be prepared at that decisive moment? Based on the title, I’m sure you' have guessed the solution. The intent is to know exactly what the viewfinder will preview to me when I raise the camera to my eye based on me knowing where I should be standing to execute the pre-visualization.
For the remainder of 2025, I will dedicate myself to one focal length, and possibly even one body. The critical decision that needs to be made now is,
35mm? or
50mm?
This last time I went to shoot film I took the 35mm and felt like I could not get close enough. Now, this triggers two things:
Since I could not muster up the courage to get close, then I should go more telephoto (i.e., 50mm)
Since I could not muster up the courage to get close, then I have more reason to use the 35mm to get out of my comfort zone.
Here is what I have concluded on this back and forth:
I am locked-in for 35mm focal length for the remainder of 2025 with the exception of intent to shoot portraits.
I have been wanting to shoot self portraits and portraits of my girlfriend : )
It’s me and my 35mm v. the World.
