Q2 Check In

We have arrived to April 2024. So cliche but it does feel like it went by fast.

What I want to accomplish is a status report to myself on my set goals for this year to see what I need to work on. I have not looked back at what I wrote, but I recall some of the things; I should recall all of them to be effective. Let me bring back the list and comment on each item:

  1. Photography

    • Limit myself to my main (3) bodies and my aforementioned 35mm lens.

      • I have used my Monochrome and M6 more than any of the others. I have used the M9 when I want color but in digital format.

      • I have stuck with the Leica 35mm f/1.4 about 90% of the time. News is that I bought a contender very recently. I now have a Mandler 35mm f/2! The remaining 10% has gone to my 50mm lenses specifically for portraits; whether they are for me or for Paco.

    • Add some instant media here and there.

      • I have not used these once. I can think of a few upcoming occasions where this would be a good idea.

    • Shoot more film, and more specifically B&W film.

      • I’ve been shooting more film than digital, but I have not reached for B&W. The reason this was a goal is because I bought a bulk film roll; time to put that to use.

    • Abstain from buying any camera bodies this year!

      • No new camera bodies have been purchased. However, as I mentioned above I did purchase a lens and a camera bag. Very proud of myself thus far.

    • Develop and Scan my own film.

      • I have not done this yet. I have the tools but not the space.

  2. Videography

    • Begin short film content.

      • I haven’t done much for this goal. I will start writing down ideas for films as I usually forget them.

  3. Sketching

    • Sketch daily items, and work on charcoal drawings.

      • This dropped off pretty quick. It’s fun but hard to keep up with it. I can pick it back up once I finish this semester.

    • Determine what I like to draw.

      • Same as above.

  4. Music

    • Continue to play.

      • I’ve only picked up the guitar here and there to blow off some steam.

  5. Books

    • Read one book every two months.

      • Uhhhhh 😮‍💨 no books down. I will make better choices and turn the TV off.

    • Review one photography book every month.

      • I bought some new ones but haven’t gone through them. I did go through one book but I can’t recall which one.

  6. Social Media

    • Expand my channel.

      • This is one that I was actively working on. Every week I’d get a report on how to keep getting more attention. It would recommend two reels and one post per week for example which is doable but at the same time I don’t want to do it just to check a box. I can work more on this after the semester is over.

Summary (tl';dr):

I fell off on the things that matter. The takeaway for myself is to get out there and shoot more. Educate myself more. Be more creative. Turn off the tube. Stop doomscrolling. Yes, right now my school and work are very high priority but there is time to snap some pics.

See you on the streets.
